Red Lake Travel Guide
Welcome to Red Lake!
Outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world find their way to Red Lake, Ontario every year. The most northwestern municipality in Ontario, this secluded, full-service community offers a vast landscape of boreal forest, studded with freshwater lakes and rivers. Located 470 km (290 mi) northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba this isolated town supports surrounding communities with its hub of dining and shopping. In the fall, visitors can try their hand at angling at the Catch and Release Walleye Tournament. Not just a fishing community, Red Lake is also known as the "Norseman Capital of the World" and hosts the Norseman Floatplane Festival every summer in tribute to the aircraft that helped develop the region—s gold mining industry in the 1930s. Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, 30 km (19 mi) to the west of Red Lake, is a huge tourist hotspot full of boreal wildlife and fish. Its remoteness in the Arctic watershed of the Canadian Shield makes it accessible only by boat or plane. Featuring over 2,000 km (1243 mi) of connecting river and lake waterways, it is perfect for canoeing and offers backcountry campsites and outpost lodges, from all-inclusive resorts to self-catering cabins. The region also has a rich aboriginal fur-trading and mining history, which has been preserved at the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre, open year-round.
